I am an Associate Professor in the School of Computing and the Treasurer of the Asia-Pacific Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics, the premier international scientific and professional society for people working on computational treatment of human language. I’m interested in many aspects of applying AI to human language.

My research focuses on applied problems in Natural Language Processing like native language identification and other author profiling, along with associated privacy issues, to more theoretically motivated problems like computational modelling of language change, with a focus on vowel harmony.  I also look at multimodal problems, such as image captioning that combines language and vision, as well as applications in other domains such as health data, psychology and cognitive science.
