I am a Professor in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and a Fellow of the OSA. My background is in laser and light source development with a current focus on extreme optical materials to tackle challenging problems in laser applications.

My research centers on exploring the nonlinear optical and laser properties of synthetic diamond, a relatively “new” material that is highly promising for extending the power and frequency range of a range of optical devices. Though the impact spans numerous fields, a major component of my current projects are driven by applications in space adaptive optics such as SatComm and space situational awareness. Other diamond directions we are working on include low-noise frequency synthesis in the millimeter wave and optical bands, high-power lasers and high-power high-frequency diamond transistors.
